The Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities had changed its name to Career Education Colleges and Universities, a move coming as the for-profit college industry struggles with dwindling enrollment amid greater regulatory and media scrutiny.
The association's governing board approved the name change Monday at the group's annual meeting in Orlando, Inside High Ed reported. CEO Steve Gunderson had previously indicated a name change was coming as the now-rebranded CECU recently expanded efforts to bring more nonprofit colleges into its membership.
"Our sector and our association will be even more focused on career education and the necessary work in government relations, leadership, research and communications," Gunderson said in a written statement. "We will be the voice and vision of postsecondary career education."
CECU has struggled as its industry has struggled. In a letter to members last year, Gunderson said both membership and attendance at its events were down. The association has cut $9 million from its operating budget in four years.
Enrollment in for-profit colleges had dropped amid accusations the institutions put profit ahead of student success. The Obama administration has enacted a "gainful employment" rule tying federal student loans to the number of students able to find well-paying jobs after graduation. CECU initially was successful in blocking the rule in court, but the administration came back with a revised rule that has so far withstood court scrutiny. http://bit.ly/24vD9L7
